What is Intravenous Pylography (IVP)?

• An x-ray (radiograph) is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. Imaging with x-rays involves exposing a part of the body to a small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the inside of the body.
• An intravenous pyelogram, also called an excretory urogram, is an X-ray exam of your urinary tract. An intravenous pyelogram lets your doctor view your kidneys, your bladder and the tubes that carry urine from your kidneys to your bladder (ureters).
• An intravenous pyelogram may be used to diagnose disorders that affect the urinary tract, such as kidney stones, bladder stones, enlarged prostate, kidney cysts or urinary tract tumors.
• During an intravenous pyelogram, youll have an X-ray dye (iodine contrast solution) injected into a vein in your arm. The dye flows into your kidneys, ureters and bladder, outlining each of these structures. X-ray pictures are taken at specific times during the exam, so your doctor can clearly see your urinary tract and assess how well its working.

An intravenous pyelogram may be used to help diagnose conditions that affect the urinary tract, such as:
• Kidney stones
• Bladder stones
• Enlarged prostate
• Kidney cysts
• Urinary tract tumors
• Structural kidney disorders, such as medullary sponge kidney — a birth defect of the tiny tubes inside the kidneys

Any preparation needed?

These exam require some special preparations (As bowel cleaning):
• You should do renal functions test.
The bowel-cleansing regimen for KUB consist of :
• Smallervolume of cleansing liquid.
• Your diet will be restricted to clear liquids the day before the examination.
• It is very important to clean out your colon the night before your Exam.
• You will be asked to take either a set of pills and/or a liquid laxative.
• You should inform your physician of any medications you are taking.
• You will be asked to remove some of your clothes and to wear a gown during the exam. You may also be asked to remove jewelry, removable dental appliances, eye-glasses and any metal objects or clothing that might interfere with the x-ray images.
